As Cameroon prepares for the presidential election on October 12, Civic Watch is intensifying its campaign against the forces of hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation that threaten to distort public opinion and undermine democratic participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our recent participation in ELECAM\u2019s roundtable on \u201cThe Right to Information and Media Responsibility in the Electoral Process: Issues and Challenges\u201d<\/em> reaffirmed our commitment to ethical journalism and civic integrity. Represented by Dr. Ngala Desmond Ngala, Civic Watch joined media professionals, civil society actors, and electoral authorities in a timely dialogue on how to safeguard the truth during this critical electoral season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roundtable served as a platform to confront the growing influence of false narratives and divisive rhetoric, especially in an era where social media can amplify misinformation at an alarming rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Ngala\u2019s remarks were both urgent and principled. He reminded attendees that journalists are not mere conveyors of content; they are the watchdogs of society. In a digital landscape where fake news spreads rapidly and often unchecked, he urged reporters to resist the pressure of speed and instead prioritize accuracy. Every piece of information, he stressed, must be rigorously verified before publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His message was clear: when journalists fail to uphold these standards, they risk fueling misinformation and disinformation, which can distort public perception and destabilize democratic processes. Civic Watch continues to support this call through its newsroom partnerships and ethics training programs, encouraging media professionals to adopt source-driven reporting and transparent editorial practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Dr. Ngala extended this responsibility beyond the newsroom. He emphasized that every citizen has a role to play in ethical reporting and in debunking false narratives. Verifying sources before sharing information is not just a journalistic principle; it is a civic duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civic Watch echoes this call to action through its #237Check<\/strong> <\/a>platform, which monitors viral claims and provides real-time corrections, and through its Youth Ambassadors Networks <\/strong>like  <\/strong>, the Africa Factchecking Fellowship- AFFCameroon<\/a>, that trains journalists, content creators, bloggers on factchecking, #Media4Peace program which skills journalists on how to report in times of conflict\/crisis, elections and words to use not to fan the flames. Youth and community leaders trained on Media and Information Literacy and counter-speech strategies. These efforts are designed to build a resilient information ecosystem where the truth is protected by both professionals and the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent months, Civic Watch has documented a surge in misleading content across encrypted platforms, prompting the expansion of its digital verification toolkit and community workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Ngala also addressed the harmful impact of ethnic bias in election coverage. He condemned the use of divisive labels such as \u201cthe candidate from Douala,\u201d<\/em> asserting that \u201celections are not ethnicized in Cameroon.\u201d<\/em> Such reductive framing, he argued, distracts from substantive policy debates and reinforces regional fault lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civic Watch\u2019s <\/strong>campaign against Hate Speech directly tackles this issue by convening community forums and partnering with traditional leaders to promote inclusive narratives. Journalists, he urged, must diversify their sources and avoid simplistic angles that reduce candidates to their origins rather than their ideas. By focusing on platforms, policies, and leadership qualities, the media can help unite voters around the issues that matter most and foster a more informed electorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In closing, Dr. Ngala appealed to authorities to support journalists by ensuring transparency and open access to electoral data. He reminded reporters that choosing accuracy over speed is not a favor to anyone; it is a service to the nation and a safeguard for their own credibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alors que le Cameroun se pr\u00e9pare pour l’\u00e9lection pr\u00e9sidentielle du 12 octobre, Civic Watch intensifie sa campagne contre les discours de haine, la d\u00e9sinformation et la m\u00e9sinformation qui menacent de fausser l’opinion publique et de saper la participation d\u00e9mocratique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notre r\u00e9cente participation \u00e0 la table ronde d’ELECAM sur \u00ab Le Droit \u00e0 l’information et la responsabilit\u00e9 des m\u00e9dias dans le processus \u00e9lectoral : enjeux et d\u00e9fis<\/strong> \u00bb a r\u00e9affirm\u00e9 notre engagement en faveur du journalisme \u00e9thique et de l’int\u00e9grit\u00e9 civique. Repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 par le Dr Ngala Desmond Ngala, Civic Watch a rejoint des professionnels des m\u00e9dias, des acteurs de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 civile et des autorit\u00e9s \u00e9lectorales pour un dialogue opportun sur la mani\u00e8re de pr\u00e9server la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 durant cette p\u00e9riode \u00e9lectorale critique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La table ronde a servi de plateforme pour confronter l’influence croissante des faux r\u00e9cits et de la rh\u00e9torique de division, en particulier \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 les r\u00e9seaux sociaux peuvent amplifier la d\u00e9sinformation \u00e0 un rythme alarmant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le message du Dr Ngala aux journalistes \u00e9tait \u00e0 la fois urgent et bas\u00e9 sur des principes forts. Il a rappel\u00e9 aux participants que les journalistes ne sont pas de simples relais d\u2019informations ; ils sont les sentinelles de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Dans un paysage num\u00e9rique o\u00f9 les fausses nouvelles se propagent rapidement et souvent sans v\u00e9rification, il a exhort\u00e9 les journalistes \u00e0 r\u00e9sister \u00e0 la pression de la vitesse et \u00e0 privil\u00e9gier la pr\u00e9cision. Chaque information, a-t-il soulign\u00e9, doit \u00eatre rigoureusement v\u00e9rifi\u00e9e avant publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son message \u00e9tait clair : lorsque les journalistes ne respectent pas ces normes, ils risquent d’alimenter la d\u00e9sinformation et la m\u00e9sinformation, ce qui peut fausser la perception du public et d\u00e9stabiliser les processus d\u00e9mocratiques. Civic Watch soutient cet appel \u00e0 travers ses partenariats avec les r\u00e9dactions et ses programmes de formation \u00e0 l’\u00e9thique, encourageant les professionnels des m\u00e9dias \u00e0 adopter un journalisme bas\u00e9 sur les sources et des pratiques \u00e9ditoriales transparentes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En outre, le Dr Ngala a \u00e9tendu cette responsabilit\u00e9 au-del\u00e0 des r\u00e9dactions. Il a soulign\u00e9 que chaque citoyen a un r\u00f4le \u00e0 jouer dans un journalisme \u00e9thique et dans le d\u00e9menti des faux r\u00e9cits. V\u00e9rifier les sources avant de partager une information n’est pas seulement un principe journalistique ; c’est un devoir civique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civic Watch fait \u00e9cho \u00e0 cet appel \u00e0 l’action \u00e0 travers sa plateforme #237Check<\/strong>, qui surveille les fausses affirmations virales et fournit des corrections en temps r\u00e9el. De plus, elle agit via ses r\u00e9seaux d’ambassadeurs de la jeunesse, comme le programme Africa Factchecking Fellowship (AFFCameroon)<\/strong>, qui forme des journalistes, des cr\u00e9ateurs de contenu et des blogueurs au fact-checking, ainsi que le programme #Media4Peace<\/strong> qui enseigne aux journalistes comment couvrir les conflits, les crises et les \u00e9lections, en choisissant les mots justes pour ne pas attiser les tensions. Ces efforts visent \u00e0 construire un \u00e9cosyst\u00e8me d’information r\u00e9silient o\u00f9 la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 est d\u00e9fendue par les professionnels comme par le public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Au cours des derniers mois, Civic Watch a document\u00e9 une augmentation du contenu trompeur sur les plateformes chiffr\u00e9es, ce qui a incit\u00e9 l’organisation \u00e0 \u00e9largir sa trousse d’outils de v\u00e9rification num\u00e9rique et \u00e0 intensifier ses ateliers communautaires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Dr Ngala a \u00e9galement abord\u00e9 l’impact n\u00e9faste des pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s ethniques dans la couverture \u00e9lectorale. Il a condamn\u00e9 l’utilisation d’\u00e9tiquettes de division telles que \u00ab le candidat de Douala \u00bb, affirmant que \u00ab les \u00e9lections ne sont pas ethnicis\u00e9es au Cameroun \u00bb. Il soutient qu’un tel cadrage r\u00e9ducteur d\u00e9tourne les d\u00e9bats de fond sur les politiques et renforce les lignes de fracture r\u00e9gionales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La campagne de Civic Watch contre les discours de haine s’attaque directement \u00e0 ce probl\u00e8me en organisant des forums communautaires et en s’associant \u00e0 des chefs traditionnels pour promouvoir des r\u00e9cits inclusifs. Les journalistes, a-t-il insist\u00e9, doivent diversifier leurs sources et \u00e9viter les angles simplistes qui r\u00e9duisent les candidats \u00e0 leurs origines plut\u00f4t qu’\u00e0 leurs id\u00e9es. En se concentrant sur les programmes, les politiques et les qualit\u00e9s de leadership, les m\u00e9dias peuvent aider \u00e0 unir les \u00e9lecteurs autour des questions qui comptent le plus et favoriser un \u00e9lectorat mieux inform\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En conclusion, le Dr Ngala a lanc\u00e9 un appel aux autorit\u00e9s pour qu’elles soutiennent les journalistes en garantissant la transparence et l’acc\u00e8s ouvert aux donn\u00e9es \u00e9lectorales. Il a rappel\u00e9 aux reporters que choisir la pr\u00e9cision plut\u00f4t que la vitesse n’est pas un service rendu \u00e0 quiconque ; c’est un service rendu \u00e0 la nation et une garantie pour leur propre cr\u00e9dibilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alors que Civic Watch se tourne vers le 12 octobre, nous r\u00e9affirmons notre engagement en faveur d’un journalisme \u00e9thique et bas\u00e9 sur des sources fiables, et notre volont\u00e9 de donner aux citoyens les moyens de d\u00e9fendre la v\u00e9rit\u00e9. La lutte contre les discours de haine et la d\u00e9sinformation n’est pas une campagne secondaire ; elle est au c\u0153ur de la sant\u00e9 de notre d\u00e9mocratie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
